Installing Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour Archipelago 1.1.0
What you need
- Archipelago. 0.6.7 is the tested compatibility baseline and the minimum declared by this APWorld.
- Dolphin for GameCube emulation.
- Your own clean USA GFTE01 Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour ISO, exactly 1,459,978,240 bytes.
- The official 1.1.0 APWorld and matching patch. The PopTracker is optional.
Required clean ISO SHA-256:
08a1f0c1f7336418fa814a19907f2094d81062d5e7636ab096a43c41132410f0
Patched 1.1.0 ISO SHA-256:
859b850cf14546404f0c2556b62dcb39451177edf071a9ace5e550d5c146dca0
Another region, an already-patched image, or an RVZ file is not valid patch input. If you use RVZ, convert your own dump back to ISO in Dolphin first; the resulting clean ISO must pass the checksum.
1. Install the APWorld
Close Archipelago and the MGTT client. Put mgtt.apworld in Archipelago's custom_worlds folder. Remove older or duplicate MGTT APWorlds from that folder, then restart Archipelago.
Keep the file named mgtt.apworld. Do not unzip it or rename it to include a version number. A ZIP-based internal format is normal.
The game is listed as Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour. Use the MGTT client entry in the launcher, not the generic text client.
2. Patch your own ISO
Extract the outer release bundle or the standalone Patch ZIP into a normal folder. Inside it you should have:
MGTT-1.1.0.mgttpatchApply Patch.cmdApply-MGTTPatch.ps1mgtt_patch.py
Windows — drag and drop
Keep exactly one .mgttpatch in that folder. Drag your clean ISO onto Apply Patch.cmd. Follow the prompts, wait for success, and use the newly created ISO. This Windows route uses PowerShell and does not require Python.
Do not run the command file from inside the ZIP preview. The inner patch is itself a ZIP-based container, but its filename must end in .mgttpatch, not .mgttpatch.zip. Turn on filename extensions in Explorer if unsure.
Python alternative — Windows, macOS or Linux
Install Python 3.10 or newer if necessary. In PowerShell or Terminal, change to the extracted patch folder and run:
python mgtt_patch.py apply "clean.iso" "MGTT-1.1.0.mgttpatch" "MGTT-Archipelago-1.1.0.iso"
On macOS/Linux, use python3 if that is your Python command. Replace the filenames with full quoted paths if they are elsewhere.
This is a shell command, not Python code: do not type it into a Python >>> prompt. You can run it from any folder if you supply full paths to the script, input ISO, patch and output ISO.
Both patchers validate the source and output checksums, retain the clean source, and refuse to overwrite an existing output. Allow about 1.5 GB of free space for the new image.
3. Generate and host a room
Choose one provided YAML per MGTT player. Edit its name and settings, then generate your multiworld using Archipelago with this APWorld installed. Each player needs a unique slot name. The person generating needs every custom APWorld used by the room.
The Recommended, Balanced Bags and Full Features YAMLs are alternatives, not three required players. Use the resulting generated game to host a room. Installing a custom world locally does not automatically add it to a website's YAML-generation list.
4. Start playing
- Stop Dolphin before changing memory cards. Back up existing saves.
- For a new AP slot, use a dedicated fresh GameCube memory card or GCI-folder save environment. Do not delete/swap a card after booting; the loaded save is already in RAM.
- Cold-boot the new 1.1.0-patched ISO in Dolphin. Do not load an old Dolphin savestate.
- Open the MGTT client from Archipelago Launcher. Connect with the room's server/address, exact slot name and password if required.
- Wait for both slot authentication and the game's connection/inventory messages. Keep the client running while playing.
- Save and exit normally when possible. Use one gameplay client per slot. An additional PopTracker connection is fine.
The client connects to Dolphin through its memory interface; you do not enter the Archipelago server in Dolphin. Windows uses direct memory access by default. On macOS the client defaults to Dolphin's GDB interface at 127.0.0.1:55000; Dolphin must be configured to expose that local interface. Windows is the primary packaged launcher workflow; other platforms require the corresponding Dolphin and Python dependency setup.
macOS GDB connection
With Dolphin closed, open the active Dolphin User folder's Config/Dolphin.ini. In its existing [General] section add GDBPort = 55000 (or create that section if missing). Start the patched game, then start the MGTT client. The game may wait for that first connection before running. After a GDB disconnection, stop and restart emulation before reconnecting. Keep the debug interface local; do not forward its port to the internet.
If running the client from an Archipelago source checkout on Windows/Linux, install mgtt/requirements.txt into that same Python environment. Do not install dependencies into an unrelated Python and expect a frozen Windows launcher to use them. The launcher-installed APWorld path and source-development path are different setups.
5. Optional PopTracker
Install PopTracker 0.35.3 or newer. Put MGTT-PopTracker-1.1.0.zip in its packs folder and load it without extracting it. Click its AP connection button and use the same server and slot as the MGTT client.
The MGTT client publishes full inventory snapshots for startup/reconnect refresh. Choose the compact, per-character or global layout to match your preference. Manual tracker clicks only change your local display; they do not award checks in Archipelago.
Updating a prerelease game
- Replace the APWorld and repatch the clean ISO with 1.1.0. RC1/RC2 use the same protocol number, but their ISO lacks this release's multiplayer auto-club fix.
- Public item/location IDs are retained. Existing rooms keep their generated options and locations; they do not gain new checks merely by replacing the client.
- Use a fresh room/save to experience the full release settings. Do not mix saves or savestates between slots.
- Old false checks cannot be retracted. Existing duplicate Advance Tour records are preserved rather than deleted automatically.
- The new durable mulligan ledger begins with this version; spending that an older client never recorded cannot be reconstructed.
- Keep the client's
mgtt-statefolder in the Archipelago user-data directory. It backs up pending mulligan spending and distance credit if a connection is interrupted.
If something goes wrong
First check the APWorld version, patched ISO checksum, exact slot name, and whether Dolphin was cold-booted with the intended save. Keep both the Archipelago client log and any error message.
If a check is missed or incorrectly awarded, note the course, mode, golfer, human/CPU turn and what happened. If still near the event, run /mgtt_diagnostics short-label and /mgtt_capture short-label, wait for capture completion, and attach the outputs to your report. Do not upload an ISO or memory card. Captures contain game memory; share them privately for diagnosis, not as release assets.
If debug commands are enabled in the room's YAML, /help lists the available item/check tools. Server permissions can still affect cheat delivery. Turn debugging on before generation if your group wants that fallback.
